Position Summary
As a Substation Protection & Controls Lead Technician, you will play a key role in the day-to-day operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of protection and control systems at our substations. This role is ideal for individuals with commissioning or field testing experience who are looking to transition into a stable, long-term operations role supporting critical grid reliability.
You will be responsible for maintaining, testing, and repairing protection and control systems, ensuring compliance with company, NERC, and IEEE standards.
Key Responsibilities
Perform routine testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting of protective relays, control circuits, and associated substation equipment.
Lead and mentor a team of technicians performing field testing, relay verification, and system checks.
Review and interpret protection schematics, control wiring diagrams, and logic drawings.
Ensure reliability and performance of relays, breakers, CTs, PTs, SCADA, and communication systems.
Conduct end-to-end testing and relay coordination checks following maintenance or equipment replacement.
Maintain detailed records, documentation, and as-left drawings for all testing and maintenance activities.
Collaborate with system operators and engineering teams to ensure safe clearances and efficient work execution.
Adhere to all LOTO, OSHA, and company safety procedures at all times.
Participate in on-call rotation for substation support as needed.
Qualifications
Minimum 5 years of experience in substation protection and control, relay testing, or commissioning.
Strong understanding of protective relay principles, SCADA systems, and substation communication protocols.
Proficiency using Omicron CMC, Doble F6150, or similar relay test equipment.
Ability to interpret and apply electrical schematics, protection drawings, and system diagrams.
OSHA 30 Construction Safety certification (or ability to obtain).
Associate's degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or equivalent field experience preferred.
Experience with SEL, GE, Basler, Beckwith or similar relays.
Working knowledge of NERC PRC and IEEE testing standards is a plus.
Valid driver's license and clean driving record required.
